Lauded by the New York Times for "the evening’s richest instrument — powerful yet capable of softness,” Ricardo José Rivera makes important Verdi role debuts in the 2024-25 season: the title role of Macbeth in the rarely-performed 1847 score in a return to Teatro Nuovo, Stankar in Stiffelio as he returns to Sarasota Opera, and Conte di Luna in Il trovatore with Opera Colorado. He also sings Silvio in Pagliacci (Pittsburgh Opera), Belcore in L’elisir d’amore (Florida Grand Opera), and Sharpless in Madama Butterfly (Colorado Springs Philharmonic) in addition to returning to Opera San José as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte. In future seasons, he debuts at the Metropolitan Opera and New National Theatre Tokyo.
Other recent performances include Severo in Poliuto and Norcesto in Uccelli’s Anna di Resburgo (Teatro Nuovo), Duke of Nottingham in Roberto Devereux (Washington Concert Opera), Don Carlo in Ernani and Miller in Luisa Miller (Sarasota Opera), Silvano in Un ballo in maschera (Chicago Symphony Orchestra), Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Riolobo en Florencia en el Amazonas (Opera San José), Silvio in Pagliacci (Opera San Antonio), Escamillo in Carmen (Opera de Puerto Rico), and Schaunard in La bohème and Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana (CulturArte de Puerto Rico). With the Lyric Opera of Chicago, he has sung Sharpless and Yamadori in Madama Butterfly, Schaunard in La bohème, and Baron Douphol in La traviata.
