THE OPERA
Sung in Italian with projected English supertitles
Premiered at Teatro Regio in Turin (1893)
Building on the success of our recent production of La Rondine and continuing our celebration of Puccini, we are thrilled to present Manon Lescaut. Premiering at Teatro Regio in Turin in 1893, Manon Lescaut was Puccini’s third opera but his first great success. Based on a 1731 French novel and not to be confused with Jules Massenet’s earlier opera Manon on the same subject, Puccini stated “‘Manon’ is a heroine I believe in...Why shouldn’t there be two operas about Manon? Massenet feels it as a Frenchman, with powder and minuets. I shall feel it as an Italian, with a desperate passion.” Washington Concert Opera is excited to bring Puccini’s Italian passion to local audiences with our production of Manon Lescaut.
Acclaimed American soprano Corinne Winters sings the title role as “Manon Lescaut”. Educated at Towson University and Peabody Conservatory, she comes to WCO having sung over 30 leading roles at major opera houses around the world. Mexican-American tenor Joshua Guerrero joins WCO as “Chevalier des Grieux” after his recent success in the role at the Wiener Staatsoper. Levi Hernandez brings his “warm, inviting baritone” to the role of “Lescaut”. All three artists are making their WCO debuts.
