Opera Outside brings the magic of opera beyond the concert hall and into the heart of Washington, DC. Presented by Washington Concert Opera, this community-focused series of free, open-air concerts features rising artists performing in some of the city’s most beloved public spaces. From Dupont Circle Park to Union Market, Opera Outside creates an inviting, come-as-you-are atmosphere where everyone—families, friends, and even pets—can enjoy world-class music under the open sky.

Jason Garcia-Kakuk is a tenor from Queenstown, MD, and is currently based in Rochester, NY. His recent credits include roles at the Aspen Summer Music Festival as a Renée Fleming Artist. There, he was seen as Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Britten) and as Tamino (cov.) in Die Zauberflöte. Prior to Aspen, he was seen in multiple productions at The Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as a Gerdine Young Artist. Earlier this year, Jason finished his Master’s degree at The Eastman School of Music where he was seen as Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, Ruiz Alonso in Ainadamar (Golijov), and Janik in The Diary of One Who Disappeared (Janáček). His 2025 engagements include performances as Der Steuermann in The Flying Dutchman with the Buffalo Philharmonic at ArtPark, The Duke of Mantua (cov.) and Matteo Borsa in Rigoletto, as well as Colin in The Anonymous Lover (Bologne) with Finger Lakes Opera. Other credits over the years include Mr. Angel in The Impresario and Lensky(cov.) in Eugene Onegin with Opera Baltimore. Jason is also a 2025-2026 North Carolina District winner of The Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.

Jason Gonzalez is a tenor from Santa Barbara, CA who has had success in both operatic and concert repertoire. During his 2024-2025 season, he sang the tenor solo in Carmina Burana at Baltimore’s Meyerhoff Symphony Hall under the baton of Andrew Grams, and the tenor solo in Haydyn’s Missa Anguistis at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, as well as several solo concerts with Bach in Baltimore. He also premiered the role of Alexander Scriabin in a new opera, The Death of Alexander Scriabin, by Antonio Sanz Escallón.
This past year Jason joined Tri-Cities Opera as a resident artist, taking part in their productions of Gianni Schicchi (Rinuccio) and La Traviata (Gastone/Alfredo cover), as well as participating in several other concerts and events with the company. From there, he joined Opera North for their 2026 summer festival season where he sang Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola, First Crony in The Ballad of Baby Doe, and Fyedka in Fiddler on the Roof.
Jason holds degrees from Oklahoma City University and the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University.

Praised as a “vibrant lyric soprano” (Opera Wire) with “a beautiful, expressive voice” (OperaGene), American soprano Viviana Aurelia Goodwin is a rising talent.
Currently, she resides in Washington, D.C., where she is a member of the Cafritz Young Artist Program at Washington National Opera. She has enjoyed summer festivals with The Glimmerglass Festival (2026 & 2025), Merola Opera Program (2024), and Des Moines Metro Opera (2022 & 2023). She attended Rice University, studying with renowned soprano Nova Thomas, and Oklahoma City University with Emmy Award-winning tenor Jeffrey Picon. She has also studied with Betsy Bishop, Heidi Grant Murphy, and Neil Shicoff.
In the upcoming 2026/27 season, Ms. Goodwin is looking forward to her role debut as Ilia in Mozart’s Idomeneo with the Washington National Opera. Prior to the holiday season, Ms. Goodwin will debut at The Metropolitan Opera as Litzie in the world premiere performance of Missy Mazzoli’s Lincoln in the Bardo.
She is currently concluding her 2025 season with The Glimmerglass Festival in their productions of Madame Butterfly and Oklahoma, performing the role of Virginia and covering Laurey Williams, as well as Despina in a new adaptation of Così fan tutte. She has also performed previously as Freida in their run of Sunday in the Park with George that won the 2025 Musical Theatre Award at the International Opera Awards.
Most recently, she appeared in the title role of Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha, adapted by Damien Sneed and Kyle Bass and directed by Denyce Graves. In the 2025/26 season, she also portrayed Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and Clara in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, all with the Washington National Opera.
She has had the pleasure of notable concert performances with diverse roles and scenes including La bohème (Musetta), Les contes d’Hoffmann (Giulietta), Don Giovanni (Zerlina), L’amico Fritz (Suzel), Le nozze di Figaro (Susanna), Wicked (Glinda), Ragtime (Sarah), and Carousel (Carrie Pipperidge). She has also enjoyed appearances with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony and ROCO Houston Chamber Orchestra. In the 2026/27 season, she will debut with the Fort Worth Symphony and as the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Fredericksburg Symphony.

Jonathan Patton is quickly establishing himself as a compelling interpreter of both standard and contemporary repertoire. A former Cafritz Young Artist with the Washington National Opera, he appeared in eleven productions during his tenure, including the title role in Mason Bates’s The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs, Marcello in La bohème, Macbeth in a special presentation of Verdi’s Macbeth, and the creation of Austin in Cry, Wolf as part of WNO’s American Opera Initiative.
During the 2026–27 season, Patton makes his debut with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, covering Owen and Johnson in Omar, returns to the Metropolitan Opera to cover Bello in Puccini’s La fanciulla del West, makes his Verdi principal-role debut as Giorgio Germont in La traviata with Opera Modesto, and debuts the role of Eisenstein in Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus with Opera St. Petersburg.
Recent engagements include Don Giovanni with the Rapides Symphony Orchestra, the title role in Baruch’s Silence with the Muffled Voices Festival, Escamillo in Carmen with Knoxville Opera, and Scarpia in Tosca with Wolf Trap Opera. He has also appeared with Opera Southwest, Festival Napa Valley, Des Moines Metro Opera, and The Glimmerglass Festival, where his portrayal of Martin in Bernstein’s Candide was praised for its dramatic conviction and vocal authority.
Patton made his Carnegie Hall debut last year as the baritone soloist in Fauré’s Requiem with MidAmerica Productions, in addition to his National Symphony Orchestra debut as Montano in Verdi’s Otello. This last spring he returned to both Carnegie Hall and the NSO as Marco in a semi-staged performance of Puccini’s Il trittico.
A winner of the Lewisville Lake International Voice Competition and a semifinalist in the 2024 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, Patton is represented by UIA Talent Agency.

Jouelle Roberson, soprano, hails from Washington DC, Jouelle attended Duke Ellington School for the Arts. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Vocal Performance at Morgan State University studying with Marquita Lister. She then continued at Manhattan School of Music where she completed the Professional Studies Program Certificate.
Ms. Roberson recently made her Baltimore Symphony Orchestra solo debut. Singing in their Night of Opera Favorites concert along side Condutor William Langley.
She was a finalist in the Butler Opera International Competition, where she won 4th place. She was also a 2024 finalist in the Houston Grand Opera Eleanor McCollum Competition. Where she was awarded the online audience award. She also received the audience choice award in the Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition. Ms. Roberson has received both the Renata Tebaldi Award and the Public Award as a finalist in the Vincerò First Italian Worldwide Opera Competition in 2022. While attending MSM she was the 1st place winner in the Ades Vocal Competition held each year at the prestigious school.
She was a participant in the Milnes Voices 2024 program as well as a Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theater of St. Louis where she was awarded the Richard Gaddes Career Award, and returned for her second year in 2025.
Ms. Roberson graced the stage at Maryland opera with their New Voices in Opera program. Where she brought to life the role of Oshun in their production of Oshun.
In 2024 she returned to her Alma mater, Morgan State University, to play the title role of Treemonisha in Opera at Morgan an Opera Ebony’s production of Treemonisha. As a member of Saratoga Opera’s Young Artist Program and Atlanta Opera Studio, Jouelle has won kudos for her performances in both lead and supporting roles. She sang the title role in Puccini’s Suor
Angelica with Opera Lucca. Mary in Grant Still’s Highway 1 with Opera at Morgan.

Hailed for her "honeyed soprano" and "sweet amber tone" by Classical Voice North America, Filipina-American soprano Laura Corina Sanders is an artist to watch. Her notable accolades include First Prize in the Lotte Lenya Competition in 2018, First Prize in the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston Career Grant Competition in 2023, Encouragement Award winner in the 2023 Camille Coloratura Awards, 3rd place in the 2026 National Opera Association Carolyn Bailey competition, and she has twice been the recipient of an Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera National Council competition.
The 2026 season began with being named a 3rd place winner of the National Opera Association Carolyn Bailey Competition in Boston. In April, Ms. Sanders covered and performed the role of Yniold in Debussy's rarely-performed Pélleas et Mélisande at Opera Baltimore. This summer she will debut at Northern Lights Music Festival as Elvira in Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri, where she will also be featured on the annual 4th of July concert, Festive Fourth! She will then be featured as Gina in Mark Buller's The Pastry Prince in the inaugural season of Light Opera Lab (a theatrical space to feature and workshop new comedic operas). In the fall Ms. Sanders will be featured in a rare production of Bernstein's Mass in a collaborative campaign between IN Series and the Georgetown Chorale, and will debut as Miss Jessel in Britten's Turn of the Screw at Bel Cantanti Opera.
In 2025, Ms. Sanders was named a finalist at the Carolyn Bailey Argento Vocal Competition at the National Opera Association Conference, a finalist in the Dallas Opera Lone Star Competition and won 2nd prize at the MIOpera International Vocal Competition. She debuted as Elvira in L'Italiana in Algeri at both Opera In The Heights and Anchorage Opera, and appeared as Berta in Il barbiere di Siviglia at Central City Opera where she was credited by Opera News Magazine for her "polish and glowing professionalism." She then returned to Opera In The Heights as Anne in Sondheim's A Little Night Music, followed by a return to the Alabama Symphony Orchestra in their New Year's Eve Viennese Celebration concert.
2024 saw Ms. Sanders' most prolific year of performances yet, with 9 different roles. She appeared in multiple productions with Opera Orlando, including the ensemble of Frida, First Wood Sprite in Rusalka, and The Daughter in Philip Glass’ The Juniper Tree, as well as covering Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor. Over the summer, she joined Charlottesville as an Ader Emerging Artist performing Gianetta in L'elisir d'amore, then went on to debut as Little Red Riding Hood in Steven Sondheim's Into The Woods at Union Avenue Opera. In the fall she made her role and house debut as Gretel in Humperdinck's Hansel And Gretel at Mobile Opera, and appeared as Water in Rachel Portman's The Little Prince at Opera In The Heights.
In 2023 Ms. Sanders made her debut with Minnesota Opera, creating the roles of Joua Thao and Kalia Yang in the world premiere of The Song Poet by Kao Kalia Yang and Jocelyn Hagen. This was a revolutionary AAPI-focused and female-led production, where she was credited for her “winning…clear soprano.” She made multiple role and house debuts in the summer of 2023, including Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Painted Sky Opera, The Young Woman in the rarely-performed Red Carnations by Robert Baksa with Lone Star Lyric Opera, and her Canada debut as Arsinoë in the world premiere of Cleopatra Built with Opéra Queens. In the fall, Ms. Sanders continued on to join Opera Orlando as a Studio Artist for the 2023-2024 season.
In 2022 Ms. Sanders made her debut with Hawaii Opera Theatre as Mary Lennox in Nolan Gasser’s opera adaptation of The Secret Garden. Earlier that same year she completed her tenure in Shreveport Opera’s Resident Artist Program, where she appeared as Micaëla in Peter Brook’s The Tragedy of Carmen and as Gilda in Rigoletto. Shortly after moving to her current home base of Houston Texas, Ms. Sanders participated in the preliminary libretto workshop for Big Swim, an opera commissioned by Houston Grand Opera in partnership with the Asia Society of Texas.
During the 2020-2021 season at Shreveport Opera, Ms. Sanders starred as Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, and was featured in multiple roles for Shreveport Opera’s Art After Dark series, including Menotti’s The Telephone (Lucy), Benavides’ Pepito (Camila), Illick’s Feel The Tango (Sandy), and Michael Ching’s Speed Dating Tonight. Other notable engagements in 2021 included a summer residency as an Apprentice Artist at Central City Opera, where she performed as Belinda in Dido and Aeneas and covered the role of Julie in Carousel.
In the 2018-2019 season, Ms. Sanders made her debut at Baltimore Concert Opera as The Foreign Woman in The Consul, Oswego Opera Theatre as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro and Adele in Die Fledermaus. In 2018 she was a Studio Artist at Wolf Trap Opera in, where she performed as Wilhelmina in David Hanlon’s Listen, Wilhelmina!, covered the role of Ilia in Idomeneo, and collaborated with Steven Blier on his song recital entitled The Art of Pleasure.
While earning her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees at the Eastman School of Music, she received multiple accolades and notable performance opportunities. Under the baton of Benton Hess, she performed as Lucette in Cendrillon, Poppea in L’incoronazione di Poppea, and Signora Naccarelli in The Light in the Piazza. She was awarded first prize in the Friends of Eastman Opera Competition and was the winner of 2017 Voice Concerto competition, which gave her the opportunity to perform Berlioz’ cantata Herminie, H. 29 with the Eastman Philharmonia Orchestra under the direction of Maestro William LeSage. As part of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s OrKIDstra series, she performed as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance.
A keen lover of musical theatre, Ms. Sanders was praised by the Kurt Weill Foundation for her “vocal prowess, dramatic risk-taking, and canny choices of repertory” as a Lotte Lenya Competition Winner. She will be featured as a performer in Volume II of the Lotte Lenya Competition Songbook, a recording series by the Kurt Weill Foundation to showcase new and lesser-known musical theatre repertoire. She is a passionate advocate for music outreach and for developing new and innovative ways to engage audiences in the world of theatrical arts.

Collaborative pianist and vocal coach Joy Schreier is Assistant Conductor and Pianist on the music staff at Washington National Opera and also serves as Assistant Conductor and Pianist for the Cathedral Choral Society at the Washington National Cathedral. At WNO, she has assisted on the world premiere of Grounded and recent productions of Turandot, La Bohème, Fidelio, Porgy and Bess, and Il Trovatore.
She has performed in recital at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Merkin Hall, the White House, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Highlights from this past season include recitals with soprano Renée Fleming, mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, and violinist Pinchas Zukerman. A highly sought-after vocal coach, Schreier prepared Ms. Fleming for the world premiere of Kevin Puts’ The Hours at The Metropolitan Opera and for Nixon in China at Opéra National de Paris, with whom she also performed for President Joe Biden. Schreier regularly coaches and performs under the auspices of the Denyce Graves Foundation.
For her GRAMMY®-nominated album with soprano Laura Strickling, Opera News described her as a “superbly emotive pianist that wrings every nuance out.” Schmopera praised her as “an indispensable accompanist… either preternaturally intuitive or has achieved perfect communication—perhaps a bit of both.”
An avid art song recitalist, Schreier serves as the official pianist of the Washington International Voice Competition at the Kennedy Center. She earned her Doctorate in Collaborative Piano from the Eastman School of Music under Dr. Jean Barr, where she received the Barbara Koeng Award for Excellence in Vocal Accompanying and the piano prize in the Jessie Kneisel German Lieder Competition.
