THE OPERA
Iphigénie en Tauride
Christoph Willibald Gluck
Sung in French with projected English supertitles
Iphigénie en Tauride premiered at the Paris Opera in 1779 to great success. Based on the ancient Greek play by Euripides, which recounts stories of the family of Agamemnon in the aftermath of the Trojan War, this is Gluck’s last significant opera. When composing Iphigénie en Tauride, Gluck borrowed musical material from earlier in his career, a common practice in the 18th century. Bringing together many of his most outstanding musical ideas, Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride elevates the ancient Greek play in dramatic French operatic style.
American mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey returns to WCO to sing the title role of Iphigénie. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Kate is a regular guest on the world’s most celebrated stages. After his WCO debut in Lakmé, baritone Theo Hoffman returns in the role of Oreste. In his WCO debut, baritone John Moore revisits Washington, D.C. as Thoas, after his appearance in the title role of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs with Washington National Opera last season. Cuban-American tenor Fran Daniel Laucerica makes his WCO debut as Pylade.
