THE OPERA

The late 19th century saw a rise in operas set in what were, at the time, considered to be exotic locations – namely, the Asian continent. Set in India, during the rule of the British Raj, during the late nineteenth century, Delibes’ penultimate opera is widely considered to be his masterpiece and touches on familiar themes of forbidden love, duty, and honor. While not often-performed, the opera is still widely popular, even beyond the ubiquitous “Flower Duet” and “Bell Song”, both of which are prime examples of operatic mainstays in popular culture.
