The Guild for WCO’s 2019 Fall Brunch at the historic Army Navy Club (901 17th St NW, Washington, DC 20006) will highlight the career of Carmen Balthrop, renowned soprano and educator.

We are delighted that Carmen Balthrop will be our guest speaker on October 13, 2019. Ms. Balthrop will talk to us about her stage career and will engage in a stimulating question and answer exchange with the attendees on subjects of interest to all of us.

Ms. Balthrop’s illustrious career spans roles from Baroque to Contemporary, from the stages of the world class opera houses to Broadway. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Pamina in the Magic Flute in 1976, after winning the 1975 Metropolitan national auditions. She has performed in many other opera houses, including the Kennedy Center, San Franciso Opera, Canadian Opera and many more. She has performed in concert halls around the world including Austria, Amsterdam, China, Mexico and Russian and at recitals at the White House. A short list of her many roles includes Cio-Cio-San, Violetta, Michaela, Liu, Donna Elvira, Poppea and Susannah. Her voice has been described as “electrifying…a consummate performer (Washington Post) and a “voice of power and unusual tonal purity” (NY Times). Her range of repertoire as been described as “astonishing”.

Currently, she is a Professor and Coordinator of Voice/Opera at the University of Maryland.
