Opera Gems

Washington Concert Opera believes in being “of” the community by engaging with our patrons in meaningful ways. In partnership with Iona Senior Services, WCO presents Opera Gems: an engaging and enlightening lecture series throughout the season focusing on WCO productions and opera history. Led by WCO co-founder Peter Russell, Opera Gems typically take place three weeks prior to each performance at Iona. For more information, call 202-364-5826.

Pre-Performance Talks

Get the full story by joining other operagoers at our complimentary pre-performance talks in Lisner Auditorium. You will have the opportunity to hear WCO co-founder and opera scholar Peter Russell present highly engaging and informative talks on the performance you are about to see. Talks are free to all ticketholders and scheduled one hour prior to every performance. Reservations are not required.

School Residencies

This multi-disciplinary, in-school program empowers elementary students to perform in a children’s version of an opera by integrating curricular content objectives and standards with arts learning in music, theatre, and movement. Teachers and WCO teaching artists work collaboratively to develop a custom residency plan that addresses desired learning outcomes while students engage in creative storytelling through opera. This program includes: performing a children’s version of an opera, learning technical technology skills, addressing academic student learning outcomes, teaching artists sessions, opportunities for cross-curricular collaboration, and a full assembly performance.

Young Artists and College Students

WCO offers all students discounted $15 tickets for all performances throughout the season. For more information or to order, please call 202-364-5826.

WCO is at home in both the opera house and the classroom. Staff members have served as guest clinicians and lecturers at schools and organizations including Goethe-Institut, George Mason University, and with our community partners: Inspired Teaching School, Potomac Vocal Institute, and University of Maryland.

If you are interested in having Washington Concert Opera visit your program in this capacity, please call 202-364-5826.
