The Washington Concert Opera 2018 Gala will celebrate the role of women in opera, both as characters and performers. Despite its reputation of exploiting women, opera also has a rich history of empowering its female singers. In fact, it is credited as the first profession in which women could make their own fortunes and earn pay equal to their male counterparts.

Female opera singers possess a special kind of tenacity, often reflected in the roles composed for them. Whether leading an army to war, rescuing an unjustly imprisoned husband, giving up a child for the hope of a better life, outsmarting a boss making inappropriate advances, or rejecting a romance in the name of independence, opera's great heroines continue to inspire us.
